Over the years of mentoring IELTS aspirants—both Academic and General—I’ve consistently noticed one pattern: Writing Task 2, the essay component, is where most students lose out on their target band score.

After engaging in detailed conversations with over 500 students from diverse age groups and professional backgrounds, I discovered that the challenge wasn’t grammar or vocabulary alone. Instead, the most common struggles were:
Difficulty in understanding how to begin the essay
Generating relevant and logical ideas
Managing time effectively during the writing task
As a result, many candidates either leave the essay unfinished or write underwhelming conclusions, both of which significantly lower their scores.
To help overcome this, I created a simple, effective, time-managed strategy that enables students to confidently write well-structured, high-scoring essays.

Here’s a step-by-step breakdown:
Step 1: Read and Analyse the Question Carefully
Before you pick up your pen, take time to understand what’s being asked. Break the question into smaller parts. Identify keywords and figure out:
What kind of essay is it (opinion, discussion, problem-solution, advantages/disadvantages)
What is your stance (if required)
Which areas or arguments you cover
PRO TIPS: Avoid assumptions. Stick to the wording and intention of the question.
Recommended time: 5–7 minutes
Step 2: Draft a Rough Plan & Pointer Notes
On the rough sheet provided, jot down a quick essay outline. This helps organise your thoughts before writing.
Structure your plan around:
Introduction: Paraphrase the question + give your thesis/standpoint
Main Body Paragraph 1: Idea + explanation + example
Main Body Paragraph 2: Another idea + explanation + example
Conclusion: Summary + reaffirm position (if applicable)
PRO TIPS: List out - Key vocabulary or synonyms you want to use, along with any examples you can include.
Recommended time: 7–8 minutes
Total time for Steps 1 & 2: 12–15 minutes
Step 3: Write the Essay (Stick to the Plan)
Now, begin writing your essay following your structure and notes. Stay focused, avoid rambling, and be mindful of the word count:
Minimum: 250 words | Ideal: 280–300 words
PRO TIPS:
Use a variety of sentence structures
Stick to one central idea per paragraph
Make your writing logical, coherent, and grammatically sound
Recommended time: 20–22 minutes
Step 4: Proofread Your Work
Once you finish writing, don’t just stop there. Use the remaining time to:
Correct spelling and grammar mistakes
Check for clarity and flow
Make sure your arguments are on-topic and logically structured
Recommended time: 3–5 minutes
What Examiners Look For in Task 2 Essays:
Just like your final scorecard, IELTS examiners also assess your essay using four core parameters. Make sure your essay meets these:
Task Response – Have you answered the question completely and clearly?
Coherence & Cohesion – Are your ideas logically organised and well-connected?
Lexical Resource – Have you used a wide range of vocabulary and appropriate synonyms?
Grammatical Range & Accuracy – Is your essay grammatically strong with minimal errors?
Scoring well in IELTS Writing Task 2 isn’t about writing like a novelist.
It’s about being clear, structured, and time-efficient. And with regular practice using this method, you’ll:
Feel less stressed during the test
Write faster with more confidence
Increase your chances of achieving your desired band score
Remember: planning + strategy + discipline = SUCCESS
Use these steps to your advantage, and watch your Writing scores rise.
