Making the Most of Your Summer: Productive Planning
Making the Most of Your Summer: Productive Planning

Summer 2025 offers the perfect opportunity to build a strong, standout application. Here’s your roadmap to using these months wisely—from test prep to profile building and everything in between.

1. SAT Preparation:

Summer is your time to strengthen your test game.

·       If you're planning to take it in August 2025, lock in your study schedule now.

·       If you took your test in May, review your scores and consider retaking if needed.

Target Scores: SAT: 1480+

PRO TIP: If you're retaking the exam, opt for 1-on-1 tutoring. It focuses on your weak areas and can significantly boost your score.

2. IELTS/TOEFL for International Applicants:

These English proficiency tests are mandatory when applying abroad. They are valid for 2 years and assess your communication skills, not just grammar.

PRO TIP: As a certified IELTS/TOEFL trainer, I suggest school students skip full-fledged classes and instead do mock tests and expert evaluation for better results.

3. Online Courses to Boost Your Profile

Deep dive into subjects you're curious about or those aligned with your intended major. Explore platforms like Coursera, edX, Udemy, Harvard Online, and MITx.

PRO TIP: Mix up your learning—take short, diverse courses. It helps broaden your perspective and reflects initiative.

4. Start Your College Essays

Summer is the best time to get a head start on your Personal Statement and university-specific essays.

  • Begin with brainstorming ideas

  • Read sample essays

  • Draft — review — revise — repeat

PRO TIP: Keep it original. Admission officers can spot copied content instantly. Seek professional feedback, but let your voice shine through.

5. Line Up Letters of Recommendation

Start identifying 2 key teachers who can write about your strengths authentically.

Consider:

  • Years of association

  • Subjects taught

  • Your performance in their class

PRO TIP: Share a detailed activity sheet with your chosen recommenders — it helps them write a stronger, more specific recommendation.

6. Diversify Your Profile

Academic scores are just one piece of the puzzle. Use this summer to add depth to your resume. Try:

  • Research Projects

  • Internships

  • Olympiads (Science, Math, English)

  • Language Learning

  • Creative Writing

  • Soft Skills Workshops

  • Competitions or Webinars

PRO TIP: Multitasking is great—but do it with intention and focus. Quality matters over quantity.

7. Work on Your Personality

Colleges today look for well-rounded individuals, not just top scorers.

Build leadership by:

  • Organizing events

  • Hosting fests/webinars

  • Participating in student bodies

Give back to the community:

  • Volunteer at an NGO

  • Tutor underprivileged students

  • Assist in a senior care centre

PRO TIP: These experiences teach life lessons that no textbook can—and that’s what truly sets you apart in your application.
